Leonard N. Moore, Ph.D.

Leonard N. Moore, Ph.D., is the founder of the Black Student-Athlete Summit, a four-day event that brings together more than 1,000 Black Student-Athletes, professionals, and influencers from the world of college sports. Since his days attending The Ohio State University as a graduate student in the late 1990s, Dr. Moore has been a tireless advocate for Black Student-Athletes. Throughout his career he has worked with college athletic departments, professional sports leagues, and leaders in the world of sports, to ensure that Black Student-Athletes get the support they need to excel in the classroom so that they can be globally competitive on the job market.

Professor Moore is currently the George Littlefield Professor of American History and the Executive Director of the UT-HBCU Initiative at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a proud product of Jackson State University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1993 and The Ohio State University where he earned his Ph.D. in History in 1998. From 1998-2007 he was a professor at Louisiana State University, and since 2007 he has been at the University of Texas at Austin. Inside the classroom Dr. Moore teaches more than 1,000 undergraduate students in the fall semester in his two classes: History of The Black Power Movement and Black Southerners in the Age of Jim Crow. Dr. Moore also directs summer programs in Beijing, China, Cape Town, South Africa, and in Dubai. Since 2014 Dr. Moore has taken more than 600 African-American students abroad.

As a scholar Professor Moore is the author of four books on black politics including: Carl B. Stokes and the Rise of Black Political Power; Black Rage in New Orleans; The Defeat of Black Power; and his latest book Teaching Black History to White People.

He is also quite active in the Austin community. He currently serves as Board Chair of the Austin Area Urban League. He is married to Thais Bass-Moore and they have three children, ages 20, 19, and 17.
